Free Floral Fun at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park
Set in the beautiful surroundings of the historic Tatton estate, the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park offers something for all the family. To give the next generation of gardeners a great day out and encourage them to get outside, be active, grow plants and discover nature this summer, the RHS is offering under 16 year olds a visit for free.*
The Association of Manchester Allotment Societies (AMAS) will be featuring ‘The Wonderful World of Growing’. Here, children and adults alike will have the opportunity to see how fulfilling it can be to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers, from sowing and potting, to enjoying the blooms and fresh produce. The display includes vegetables and fruit, herbs for flavouring food and flowers to add colour and encourage wildlife, including bees and butterflies. Visitors will also be able to make their own bees wax candles.
Budding gardeners can also take inspiration from the Front to Front gardens created by children from local schools. The theme for this year’s gardens is favourite children’s television programmes and will include characters such as Tintin, Doctor Who, Teletubbies, Postman Pat and Bob the Builder.
As well as encouraging children to grow and care for plants, the North West School’s Container Competition will also highlight recycling. All containers used in the Jubilant Diamond Jubilee competition, celebrating the Diamond Jubilee, will be recycled objects. There will be an opportunity for visitors to vote for their favourite display during show week and the top three will be announced after the show on the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park website.
Aspiring fruit and vegetable growers can visit the RHS Summer Fruit and Vegetable Competition Pavilion for inspiration. This year, Primary and Secondary schools participating in the RHS Campaign for School Gardening from the North West have entered the Vegetable Trug Competition which will be judged by RHS Fruit &Vegetable judges. The competition is free to enter and open to all.
