The Poinsettia: A symbol of the festive season

The poinsettia, also known as Euphorbia pulcherrima, is the quintessential plant that brings colour to December. With its vibrant red bracts, it immediately captures attention and adds warmth to any space. But what makes this iconic plant so beloved? How do you care for it properly, and what creative ways can you use to showcase it? Additionally, there's a surprising alternative available: the LEGO poinsettia.

Poinsettia

A tropical plant with a fascinating story

Originally, the poinsettia comes from the tropical regions of Mexico, where it can grow as a shrub or tree reaching up to four metres in height. In Europe, it is typically sold as a compact houseplant in various colours such as red, white, and pink.

The name "poinsettia" refers to Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American diplomat who introduced the plant from Mexico to the United States in the 19th century. Since then, this tropical plant has become an indispensable part of Christmas traditions worldwide.

Care tips: Keeping your poinsettia beautiful

Although the poinsettia is known as a delicate plant, caring for it is easier than you might think. Follow these tips to keep your plant vibrant for weeks:

Caring for poinsettia

Light and temperature

Place the poinsettia in a bright location away from direct sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius. Avoid draughts, as they can cause leaf loss.

Watering

Water when the top layer of soil feels dry, but ensure no water is left in the pot to prevent root rot.

Feeding

During its blooming period, additional feeding is unnecessary. Want to keep it longer? Provide monthly liquid plant food in spring and summer.

Encouraging rebloom

From September onwards, place the plant in the dark for 12 to 14 hours daily to stimulate reblooming.

Stylish decorating with poinsettias

The poinsettia is not only a festive plant but also a creative decoration. Get inspired by these ideas:

  1. Table centrepiece: Pair it with candles and Christmas decorations for a festive focal point.
  2. Hanging plant: Use a stylish macramé hanger to display your poinsettia uniquely.
  3. Modern wreath: Add small poinsettias to a green wreath for a distinctive look.
  4. Plant combinations: Pair it with other evergreen plants like holly for a classic atmosphere.
  5. Minimalist charm: Place a single plant in a neutral pot to highlight its colours.
