What exactly are perennials?

Perennials are those plants which last for at least two years running. Usually, perennials bloom in spring and summer, lie dormant during autumn and winter and then return in all their glory in the following growing season. Certain perennials only last for two years, but there are those which can live for centuries!

Annuals only last for a single season and have to be re-seeded to continue growing. Not so with perennials! These awesome plants grow from root-stock, which allows them to flaunt their beautiful blooms through several seasons!

There are hundreds of different types of perennials. Some, at less than 2,54 cm, are really tiny, while there are others that can grow to more than a whopping 91.4 meters tall!

With the wide variety available to choose from, no garden in Norfolk should be without perennials!

Tips for growing perennials in your garden

Although perennials grow just about anywhere in a garden, there are a few factors to take into consideration, such as:

  • Where - you need to first of all establish where to plant your perennials, which can be in just about any area of your garden. Planted around a tree or along a fence or even grouped together in the middle of your yard, will give your garden that “wow” factor you’re looking for!
  • Full sun or semi-shade? – the amount of sun an area receives during the day is an important factor when choosing the perennials you want for your garden. If the area gets six or more hours of full sun a day, then choose perennials that thrive in direct sunlight. If the area where you plan to grow your perennials is semi-shady, then select those which love shady conditions. Growing conditions vary for different types of perennials, so there is little doubt that you will find some to suit any location in your garden.
  • Size does matter! – bear in mind that perennials grow bigger every year, so when choosing yours from your garden centre, remember that the size of the plant will not be the same as the small container-bound plant that you are buying.

After visiting The Garden Centre Guide and buying the perennials you want for your garden, all it will take then, once you have planted them, is to water them regularly and they will flourish for many years to come.
